Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) Intensives
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based treatment for trauma and trauma-related symptoms. It is considered an effective treatment approach for PTSD.
EMDR targets disturbing memories which are linked to present challenges. During a processing session, a chosen memory tends to lose its painful intensity and simply becomes a neutral memory of an event in the past. Other associated memories may also heal at the same time. This linking of related memories can lead to a dramatic and rapid improvement in many aspects of your life.
EMDR may support improvements in symptoms such as nightmares, hypervigilance, phobias, prolonged grief, guilt, shame, low-self-worth, and trauma-related physical symptoms such as pain without a medical cause or digestive issues.
What are EMDR intensives?
While SPG still offers standard EMDR sessions, we also offer an intensive program. This option provides extended and frequent sessions over a condensed period. It may suit you based on scheduling needs and timeline for potential changes. We focus on the targeted issue and facilitating change. This can lead to faster symptom reduction and progress.
What are the benefits?
EMDR intensives suit those who are time poor and willing to do intensive work in a short period of time. During EMDR intensives, clients are contained with frequent therapist contact while working on difficult content.

FAQ
If I’m already a weekly client or see another psychologist, can I participate in an EMDR intensive?
Yes. EMDR intensives for those already participating in treatment are available. Our EMDR Intensive program can be used to work on healing a specific issue before returning to regular therapy sessions. This would be discussed with the primary psychologist before making any changes.
What can I expect to accomplish in an EMDR intensive?
Equivalent to about 3 months of weekly therapy, completion of our program may significantly decrease the effects of single event or cluster of traumas (e.g. negative self-beliefs, disturbing emotions and body sensations). Our 7-hour program can assist in addressing one or two key challenges. It is not possible to target multiple issues in this short time. While significant healing can occur in an intensive, Complex PTSD deserves more treatment than one 7- hour program. Many clients experiencing Complex PTSD may continue to work on their trauma histories through scheduling multiple intensives.
Is the program covered by private health insurance or Medicare?
Yes. Many insurance companies reimburse a significant portion of the cost of psychotherapy. It is best to check with your provider about what reimbursement is available for you. For individuals with a valid Mental Health Care Plan, Medicare can provide rebates for each scheduled EMDR session (up to 10 per calendar year).
Is it for everyone?
No, clients are still welcome to engage in their regular sessions for EMDR. They are invited to have a complimentary 10 minute conversation with a psychologist at SPG to understand if EDMR intensives are right for you.
